Katrin Moye x Balineum tiles
A collaboration between Balineum and Nottingham-based artist, Katrin Moye, this collection is a playful homage to European Delftware tiles; proudly designed and made in the Midlands. Drawing on Moye’s original handmade ceramics, the collection features 7 painterly, botanical designs along with ‘Plain’ tiles available with optional ‘Pips’ corner motifs.

Handmade Tiles

The making process for each tile is very time-intensive – every one is hand rolled, cut and finished before a layer of white slip is applied with a soft brush. The design is then hand drawn with a pottery needle using a very old technique known as ‘sgraffito’. The colours and details are then carefully hand painted with small wolfhair brushes in a wide variety of underglazes. Each tile has to be very slowly dried out to avoid major warping issues before being bisque fired, and then dipped in a clear lead-free glaze, cleaned up and fired again for the glaze to mature.

As these tiles are handmade, variations in thickness and colours do occur – which I think adds to their charm! The nature of the earthenware clay used in making these tiles does sometimes result in very fine crazing so they are not suitable for outdoor use.
